Too much safety isn't a good learning experience either. I never did too much to prepare and had no real incidences, even with a very curious and active little one. She used scissors at 2 (not safety scissors) and learned how to be careful--imagine that. Give them their own cabinet in the kitchen, show them the dangers, talk and teach and hope for the best.
